Abbaye de Nieul sur l'Autise
At the Eastern end of the Plaine on the edge of the Marais Poitivin
stands the Royal Abbey of Nieul-sur-l'Autise, more correctly known a
l'Abbaye Saint Vincent, which was built in 1068 and is one of only a few
monastic complexes in the Poitou region that still has the three main
elements of a church, cloisters and monastic buildings intact.
In the X11 century the abbey was granted the status by Eleanor of Aquitaine then Queen of France, of "Royal Abbey."
The Romanesque cloister is the only one in Western France that remains in one piece.
There is a discovery trail centred on monastic life with touch books and state of the art museum technology.
