On the
Atlantic coast in the north of the Vendée, Notre Dame-de-Monts is a small
village that owes its existence in the main to the tourist trade. Situated
between the Island of Noirmoutier and the holiday resort of St.Jean-de-Monts, the beaches with some of the finest sand in the Vendée are backed
by large sand dunes that were planted in the 19th century with pine trees to
stabilise them. This in turn formed le Foret des Pay de Monts, which is ideal
for walking and cycling.
Behind the forest and coming right up to the
edge of the village is the Marais
Breton Vendéen, this is one of the most ecologically important areas in the
Vendée, having been drained by the monks from the middle-ages onwards it was not
until the building of the dykes on the Baie de Bourgneuf and the stabilising of
the dunes that the marshes were tamed.
The modern seafront and promenade
offer all the facilities for a beach holiday including excellent strolls. 3
beaches have surveillance from the 1st July to the end of August, and they all
have toilets and showers.
