Apremont
In the middle of the Bas Bocage on the rocky cliff side of the River Vie
is the picturesque village of Apremont. Towering over the village are
the remains of the Chateau d'Apremont and the water tower from which
there is a superb panoramic view of the valley of the river Vie and the surrounding countryside.
The steep steps carved into the rock face near the bridge lead up to the church with houses built into the cliffs. Within the village there are some impressive mansions as well as quaint cottages. Under the bridge is the old wash house and from nearby one can take a boat or canoe trip down the river Vie. From the right of the bridge upstream half a kilometre is the dam that holds back the river Vie to form the Vendée’s largest lake some 166 hectares in size and a veritable playground for both visitors and wildlife. During the season the lake is used for and all manner of water sports including swimming with boats also for hire. Nearby there is a restaurant to cater for the inner self.
The Chateau d'Apremont is the remains of a renaissance castle that was built in 1534, now owned by the local authority, it is open for visits during the season.
The Salle Panoramique. On the outskirts of the village, the water tower has a lift that will take you up the 80m to the viewing gallery. From here on a clear day you can look west towards the coast and the Ile d'Yeu, east to the plaine north to the Haut Bocage as well as the surrounding bas bocage, the River Vie and the lake stretching back past the small village of Mache. Tickets for both the chateau and the tower can be bought at the chateau.
The village gets very busy during the summer season and parking can be a problem.
There are several restaurants and cafes in the village as well as various shops.
