St.Vincent-sur-Jard

Two kilometres south-east of Jard-sur-Mer
on the D23, is the holiday resort of St.Vincent-sur-Jard, which is
built on the site of what was a former Gallic port. It is claimed that
the manor house of "Belesbat" is built on the site of a Phoenician city
that once stood on the coast. It is fabled that as a result of the sins
of its citizens the sea came in drowning city and citizens alike. The Church has a Romanesque chancel, though the bell tower is Gothic.
This pleasant resort has a sandy beach which faces south towards La Rocher and has areas of rocks on either side and these rocks are exposed at low water. The main attraction at the beach front is the country house of Georges Clemenceau who was born at Mouilleron-en-Pareds. The single storey is a typical fishermen's cottage of the Vendee which looks out to sea and the Ile d'Re.
There are interesting walks around the rocky shore line or through the pine forest.
