La Barre-de-Monts. Fromentine.

Le Barre de Monts lies on the mainland coast across from the Ile de Noirmoutier and together with the small commune of Fromentine has some wonderful beaches along with many lovely forest walks through the 600 hectares of pine and evergreen oak forest.
The ferries to the Ile d'Yeu leave from the pier at Fromentine and either side of the village you have a passage to the Ile Noirmoutier. To the west is the large bridge which dominates the sea shore and a little west is the Passage du Gois a causeway between the mainland and the Ile de Noirmoutier that is only passable at low tide.
The village is busy with the traffic travelling to the island and this has meant ample selection of shops and restaurants.
Other than tourism the main trade is oysters farming, and tastings and conducted visits can be arranged via the local tourist office.
The Eco-museum at nearby Le Daviaud is a must for anyone who is interested in the history of the Marais Breton. Also close by is the Kulmino, a water tower that has explanations on all aspects of water plus which you can climb to the top of for a stunning panoramic view of the area.

Le Pey de la Blet, just south of the town also offers panoramic views from its forty one meter high lookout platform over the Marais Breton, the Baie de Bourgneuf, Ile de Noirmoutier and, in the distance, the Ile d'Yeu.
