Vendée WINE
Fiefs Vendéens 2011 AOC awarded

The history of
wine making in the Vendée dates from the Roman era when they brought
their vines and established small vineyards that did well. This was
continued in the Middle-ages by the monks who cultivated their
patches of vines and from this time on a strong tradition of local wines
was born. Four areas of wine production, BREM, MAREUIL, PISSOTTE and
VIX were duly recognised by the wine authorities, although,
commercial wine production continues in three other areas namely the
Chantonnay, St.Philbert de Bouaine and St Hilaire de Loulay regions.
Today, about a hundred wine growers established in well defined areas
have launched into a great venture producing wine under the logo ”Fiefs Vendéen” (vineyards of Vendée) to the standard of AOC (Appellation original controlee) .
Benefiting from more sunshine than the national average, the White,
Rose' and Red wines from these areas are wines with a delicate bouquet
with completely different fragrances and characteristics.
The wines from the Brem area are produced from two different vines
called Groulleau Gris and Chenin, they are limpid and soft wines often
with a very discreet apple aroma. Situated in the south east corner of
the Vendée, the small vineyards of Vix and Pissotte produce full-bodied
wines, They are made from the same types of vines as the wines from the
other areas, with the addition of Sauvignon in the Vix region and An
Melon in the Pissotte region.
By far the largest wine growing area is in the Lay Valley around
Mareuil-sur-Lay in the Bas Bocage. Here where 3 geographical areas meet
on the remaining escarpments of the ancient Armorian massif are found
the ideal soil and climate conditions for the production of quality
wine.
Rarely mentioned are the Vineyards of Chantonnay on the upper reaches of
the River lay which produce similar wines to those of Mareuil-sur-Lay,
the area stretches from Chantonnay towards St. Cecile.
The areas of St.Philbert de Bouaine and St.Hilaire de Loulay (just north
of Montaigu) are in the Loire wine region and produce wines typical of
this region such as Gros Plant, Muscadet, Gamay, Grolleau, Cabernet,
Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvigons. This area of the Vendée produces wine
of AOC (Appellation original controlee).
These are the commercial wines, there are however thousands of small
family vineyards where wine is produced for their own consumption (many
will use similar varieties of grapes as the commercially produced wine,)
Many of these private vineyards have vines that predate the
catastrophic disaster of the Phylloxera aphid
which destroyed much of the French wine industry in the middle of the
19th century and the wine they produce has no equivalent in France, Read more..
Whatever the area, all these wines are cultivated with love by each
grower and the spirit of the country seems to sing in the bottle.
