St.Etienne-du-Bois
Situated on the D978 Pallaua to Lege Road this village is one that survived the Wars of the Vendee unscathed and as such has a fine collection of Renaissance houses. A walk around the narrow street or down the valley of the Boulogne river will uncover a wealth of interesting buildings and landscapes.
Chapelle de la Tullevriere.
7 kms from St.Etienne this chapel on the D 94 is where during the wars
of the Vendee the rebel priests celebrated Mass,there are two stained
glass windows in the chapel that depict these services. Nearby 22
men,women and children were slaughtered by the "colonnes infernales" in
1794 when they were discovered hiding, there is a plaque to their memory
in the chapel.
