Saint Laurent-sur-Sevre in the north eastern corner of the Vendee borders the River Sèvre Nantaise where the Deux Sèvres and Loire Atlantique departments meet the Vendée.
It is known as "ville saint de la Vendée " or Holy Town of the Vendée,
St Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort died here in 1716 and was buried in
the 19th century Basilica which dominates the skyline of this pretty haut-bocage town.
Every
year 25,000 visitors come to the town and most of them are pilgrims
visiting the grave of St. Louis-Marie Grignon de Montfort or one of
several religious orders that have impressive and notable buildings in
the town.
This is possibly the Sèvre Nantaise at its prettiest, with several
watermills, enchanting waterside dwellings and rocks that look like
stepping stones scattered across the river making it a most attractive
landscape. There is a narrow bridge which was built by Eiffel (of Eifel
Tower fame) which crosses the river at the edge of town.

Nearby on the banks of the river and through the wooded slopes above is the Parc de la Barbiniere. It has spectacular views of the viaduct du Barbin over which the stream train passes on route from Mortagne-sur-Sèvre to Les Epesses.
It is an enjoyable walk on the banks of the river along footpaths that
criss-cross with the small islands which reach all the way to the
viaduct and the watermill that lies in its shadow. From on top of the viaduct the views of the surrounding countryside are spectacular.
