Mervent
Mervent lies
at the heart of the forest of
Mervent-Vouvant some 12 kms north east of Fontenay le Comte in the south
Vendee. This ancient village sprung up around the castle of Mervent of which
only the foundations remain upon which the Panoramic viewing platform now gives
the best view and appreciation of the forest and lakes that surround the
town.
There was a church here as early as 900ad. The Nave with its two
windows, one to the north and one to the south are part of the original 10th
century church, the choir in a flamboyant style was constructed after the Nave
in the X1V and XV centuries with the help of the Lords of Parthenay-L'Archveque
who were the owners of the castle..
Inside the church you can see the clock
mechanism which dates from 1640 and is still working today as well a large stone
font and stain glass windows.
There are many activities around this
popular tourist village, from boating and canoeing from the centre Nautique,
there is a beach for swimming and of course with so much water, fishing either
from the shoreline or on boats.
The Fun park at Pierre Brune is a
favourite of all ages and the tree top adventure park is also well supported. You
can also go rock climbing at Pierre Blanche.
The Natur Zoo
at Mervent is ideal for all the family but especially children.
As always
with tourist spots the area has ample eateries, you can check these out on our
restaurants
in the Mervent forest page.
The main attraction though is the forest, with
its well laid out walks and cycle paths and the wonderful picnic areas that have
been supplied many under wooden roofed shelters.
