Ecluse Pointe aux Herbes
The Locks at
the Pointe-aux-Herbes are reached by taking the D25f about 1 kilometer
west of Puyravault, follow the road till its very end then turn right,
the Pointe aux Herbes is at the end of the track. While your here take
time to look at the sea dyke (digue de 1771) and beyond into the Anse de
l'Aiguillon.
By definition a lock is a collection of engineering works,(quays, gates,
dams, and bridges) and buildings including warehouses, residences and
lock keepers house built along a waterway.
Locks were built in the 19th Century on the approaches to large market
towns: Marans, Niort, Fontenay-le-Comte and Lucon where the waterways of
the marshes converged.
The L'ecluse de la Pointe aux Herbes on the Canal de Lucon is a fine
example. Using a system of lockgates and chambers it was possible for
boats to navigate between waters held at differing levels. Today with
the decline of navigatable waterways on the Marais Poitevin the need for
this type of lock has been reduced.
