As you
travel south past the Grande Baie des Sables d'Olonne you come to the beach of
La Tanchet, separated from le grande plage of Les Sables d'Olonne by an area of low
rocks. The beach is outside the area that is protected by the sea defences of
Chaume and thus receives the full Atlantic swell. This makes for great
breaks and it is thus a favourite with the surfing community. There is
surveillance on the beach during the summer and there are facilities both on the
beach and close by. The beach can get very busy during the summer season and
high tide reduces the area of sand available is considerably making it difficult
to find space. The car park on the sea front quickly fills up in the summer
months so it is advisable to get there early.
If you tire of the beach
you can visit the Zoo which is just behind the lake at Tanchet, or you can take a walk
south along the coast road where the scenery is rockier with shallow cliffs and
pine woods.
