Bazoges-en-Pareds
Bazoges-en-Pareds is situated in the Bas Bocage region
approximatly half way between Chantonnay and La Chataigneraie.
As one
approaches this quiet village that nestles in the peaceful countryside of the
South Vendée one cannot fail to see the striking tower of the Donjon,
which can literally be seen from many kilometres away in all directions standing
like a castle tower from Don Qixote's Spain.
This X1V century Medieval
Donjon, or castle keep, has been restored to its formal glory, the spiral
staircase rises for six floors to the thirty meter ramparts which give
spectacular views of the medieval gardens, the village and surrounding
countryside.
The Donjon is open to the public as a museum, as are the
medieval gardens which contain a good collection of plants and herbs which would
have been grown in medieval times.
There is also an excellent pigeon house
which has been restored.
Also of note in Bazoges-en-Pareds is the medieval
church and the Restaurant the Auberge de la Donjon.
