Just a
little down stream of the village of Boisse a dam has been built across
an old river inlet. As with all such structures on the marshes it is for
water management.
The One at Boisse was built in 1840 to render the River Vendee
navigatable from Pont Neuf in Fontenay le Comte to the mouth of the
River Longeve.
Dams built on transverse channels through out the marshes are useful in
controlling the water flow towards the Bund (embankment, dam or levee)
of the discharge channel.
Others are built upstream of the tidal gates with the aim of retaining a
sufficient body for release. The force thus produced serves to scour
any mud downstream and as far out to sea as possible.
