Gardens of the Vendée:

Rendez vous aux Jardins. The first weekend in June sees the opening of many private gardens for this day of patrimoine together with all other gardens in the Vendée

Gardens d'Olfacties at Coex near St.Gilles-croix-de-Vie.
5 hectares of amazing gardens.


Vendee Rose gardens, St Reverend. With over 8000 roses in 900 varieties this 3 acre garden is a gardener's must see.

Jardins du Loriot Between the sea and the bocage these gardens with ponds and lakes, includes a collection of 130 different bamboos and 1000 plant species in total.

Potager Extraordinaire At La Mothe Archard this garden is devoted to the extraordinary plants and in particular the gourd and pumpkin family.

St.Vincent-sur-Jard. Jardin de la Maison Georges Clemenceau.
Georges Clemenceau created this impressionist garden along with his friend artist Claude Monet.

Jardin Medieval, Bazoges-en-Pareds.This is a Garden of ancient varieties of vegetables, Medicinale, aromatiques, and sorcellerie. Open February to September

Jardine Dumaine. This attractive garden at Luçon is just behind the Mairie.

Jardine du Batiment. This delightful private garden at Thiré near St.Hermine is rarely open but well worth the effort when it is.

Jardin du Prieuré Saint Pierre. 2,Rue du Prieure, Reaumur.
The Prieure St.Pierre is a park of Monastic style which has been created over the centuries, with successive terraces as well as vegetable, fruit and flower gardens. In all it covers 10 hectares of which 4 hectares are parkland.

Jardin de Cinq Sens. Maire, St. Juire Champgillon.

La Senardiere, Bouffere is the most beautiful example of a Carres en Ile de la Renaissance (Renaissance Island  Garden) in the Vendee. The Public park is open all year.

Chantonnay,  Parc Clemenceau. A landscaped park with centuries old pines, Catalpas Cedar and maple trees. This public park opens all year.
                 
Parc Anneau. The park of "l'Auneau" was planted in 1899. It overlooks the valley of the "petit Lay". The panoramic views are remarkable.

The castle of Auneau is mid-way between Chantonnay and Bournezeau (the D949bis), in the direction of St Hilaire le Vouhis (D52). Private property, open from 1st to 10th July and from 1st to 30th September from 14h to 18h. You can visit by appointment outside these dates. Entrance free: 3€



Les Essarts,  Parc Saint Michel. This public park. is 6 hectares of parkland around a Maison de Maitre, with majestic trees and is 0pen all year round.


La Ferriere, Etang du Plessis Bergeret. This ancient lake of the Diocese of Lucon is surrounded by parkland and is Public park open all year.

Flocelliere, Parc du Château. 30 rue du Château.
This 15 hectare park around the medieval château has a medieval garden, terraces, a parc bocager and exotic plants of the XIX century.
Open Easter to Late September 14h to18h. Entrance 2€

Fontenay-le-Comte. Jardin des Cordeliers & Parc Baron.
The Jardins des Cordeliers (behind the Maire) is a "jardin Bourgeois" of the XIX century, containing some large exotic trees and is full of flowers
Parc Baron is on the site of the medieval castle of Fontenay and is a romantic landscaped park with superb views over the town.
Both are public parks and are open all year.

L'Hermenault. Parc du Chateau This is a vast park of the XVII & XVIII centuries.
Open: 15th July to 31 August, 14.30 to 18.30 
Tarif:4€ (-12years Free)

Lucs-sur-Boulogne, Parc de la Boulogne. This is a large park around the lake which takes in l'Historial de la Vendee and le Memorial de la Vendée. The public park is open all year.

Montaigu. Parc des Rochettes and the Jardin des Ramparts.
The town of Montaigu has two superb parks both of which are well worth a visit. These public parks are open all year.

Mouilleron-le-Captif. Parc de Beaupuy. A 30 hectare landscaped park with 4 lakes with majestic trees and 3 kilometres of walks.
Open all year round.

Orbrie.  Parc de la Grotte. Near Fontenay-le-Comte
a 4.4 hectares park around an ancient stately house.
Open all year.

Puy-du-Fou, Grand Parc Within this theme parK are some magnificent gardens. The valley garden is beautifully designed, superbly planted and maintained to the very highest standards.The Roserie is well maintained and there are herb and medieval gardens in several places all set in a vast wooded parkland.

Saint Fulgent. La Mare aux Fees. The ancient park to the Château de Fulgent. Comprises of woodlands and a lake.
Open all year.

ST.Laurent-sur-Sevre. Parc de la Barbiniere
This magnificent large park runs along the River Sèvre Nantaise to the Viaduc de Barbin it includes watermills and paths that criss-cross the river.

St-Michel-le-Cloucq. Parc du Château de la Baugisiere.
A vast park land of a classic site.
Open 1-18th July & 1 - 22 September.

Saint-Pexine.  Jardin de Chaligny.
This is a pretty garden of geometric design around an authentic Vendéen logis.
Open 1 -10 June & 1-10 July. Tarif: 4€

Vouvant. Jardin de Fournils.
This small formal garden of the 1920's is open on Rendez-vous aux Jardins though it can be see it from the bridge over the river Mere.

Zoos of the Vendee.

Les Sable d'Olonne Zoo. Just behind the beach at this is the Vendées largest Zoo.

Mervent Zoo. This attractive zoo in the forest of Mervent is a hit with all the family.

Maison d'Ane. This donkey farm has attractions for all the family.

L'Ile aux Papillons On the Ile de Noirmoutier this is the Vendéen Butterfly farm.

7th Continent. This is a new generation of Aquarium situated at Talmont St.Hilaire

Sealand Aquarium.  The aquarium of the Ile Noirmoutier.

Maison des Libellules. The house of the dragonfly is a state of the art exhibition centre and outdoor field study area devoted to dragonflies.

Animaux de la Ferme. This farm park has over 500 animals and is set in 10 hectares of countryside.

Haras de la Vendee
. The national stud of France. Every thing to do with horses.

Chaval Parc At Sallertaine in the Breton Marshes the Cheval Parc is devoted to the horse
There are many varied and interesting gardens and Zoos to be found in Vendee and a visit to one or two of them makes your visit more fulfilling as well as entertaining all members of the family.
