Musée Milcendeau-Jean Yoles.
This small museum three kilometres south of the village is devoted to
Charles Milcendeau (1872-1919), an artist and the writer Jean Yole which
was the pen name of Leopold Robert (1878-1956), a doctor who became a
politician and writer, who wrote books about the Vendée. Both were born
in the village.
The museum is housed in the small cottage in the countryside that was
the home of Charles Milcendeau, and one of the rooms has a series of the
artist's portraits of local people and landscapes of the Marais.
Audio-visual aids help one to understand the man and his work. The rest
of the cottage is devoted to Jean Yoles.
The second cottage contains a surprise, as one walks into the
artist’s studio/bedroom, Milcendeau has literally painted every
inch of what were whitewashed walls with frescoes in the Spanish-Moorish
style in the most vivid colours, in particular yellows and blues, and
the remodelled doorway only goes to accentuate this style. If that was
not enough to evoke the atmosphere, there are even stuffed pigeons on
the windowsill.
