Museums of the Vendee

For those that like to find out more about the History of the Vendee, its traditions, its people and their customs and the different aspects of life that makes this area of France so fascinating then a visit to one of the many Museums will be both entertaining and rewarding.

The Museums of the Vendee are in two basic groups, the general museum that covers many aspects of the region and those with more specific topics, often living museums.

Below are a list of the various museums to be found in the Vendee.


General Museums:

Museum L'abbaye St.Croix  Modern and contemporary art at Les Sables d'Olonne.

Bourrine du Bois Juquaud. Original  dwellings made from mud an interesting insight to life of the area.

Bourrine de Rosalie.  This eco museum is one of the last traditional marshland homes.

Refuge de Grasla. In the forest near Les Brouzils where the Vendeens took refuge during the Wars of the Vendee.

Musee des Traditions Populaires At Olonne-sur-Mer this museum is devoted to popular traditions of the area.

Musee-Automobiles de la Vendee This motor museum at Talmont St.Hilaire has a vast collect of cars motor bikes and carrages

Musee Deux Victories. Mouilloron-en-Pareds. This museum is dedicated to the live of France two heros of the 2 world wars.

Maison & Jardins de Georges Clemenceau. St.Vincent-sur-Jard  cottage and garden  by the sea.

Musee La Mie Caline Museum of bakery at Sallertaine

The French Protestant museum. The 400 year history of protestant in western France

Fishermans Museum Port Joinvill on the Ile d'Yeu

Salt museum. Noirmoutier-en-Ile

Cheese Museum and Goat farm  Noirmoutier-en-Ile.

Museum de Arts & Archeology  La Roche-sur-Yon.

Museum of wine at the Chateau de la Preuille, St Hilaire Loulay.

Museum of Fishing. Chateau-st.Clair, le Chaume.small museum on fishing plus a panoramique view of Les Sables from the Arundel Tower. Open; 1/4 to 30/9  10.30 till 12.30 & 15h till 18h.

Museum Andre Deluoc. 1, rue de l'Etendard. St.Michel-en-l'Herm. Tel. 02 51 30 21 89. Exhibition of 150 sculptures in stone,  marble and wood from 1929 to 1995.
