Musée Vendéen, Fontenay-le-Comte

The Museum of Fontenay was created in 1875 from the bequest made by Eugene Mouillebert, donating his collection of prints, drawings, paintings and objets d'art.
Following two new legacies in 1924 the museum finally set up. Today the museum is housed in the former rectory of the church of Notre-Dame and is dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the heritage of the South Vendée.

The ground floor houses the archaeological collections, in particular a set of Gallo-Roman glass dating from the 11th Century AD which is probably one of the richest in France, there is also the famous tomb of the "woman artist" also dating from the 11th Century

The first floor is reserved for ethnological collections, here the various forms of habitat, hunting, fishing, agriculture, handicraft, including wood furniture of the Vendée, regional costume and jewellery. It also houses the bird collection of Dr. Guerin.

The top level has a Fine Arts gallery devoted to artists of the Vendée. There are landscapes by C. Milcendeau, A. Lepere, H. Simon and J. Launois, along with a series of 19th century portraits by P. Baudy and a collection of artworks by the great copperplate engraver from Fontenay, Octave de Rochebrune. There is also a rich collection of other engravings from the 15th to 19th century.

The XIX XXth century, is a room devoted to the illustrious Fontenay citizens; François Vieta (creator of modern algebra), Nicolas Rapin, Andre Tiraqueau and a space on the history of Fontenay-le-Comte in particular with the model of the old city in 1720.
