Les Sables d'Olonne. Tel 02 51 32 01

Founded in
1622 the former Benedictine priory of Sainte-Croix now houses the museum of
modern and contemporary arts. With more than 2500m² of floor space the
exhibition is not housed in a brightly lit hall but in a 17th century building
resembling the inverted hull of a boat. Here works by Gaston Chaissac and victor
Brauner are displayed.
The collection includes important works by Albert
Marquet, Jean Dubuffet, Alberto Magnelli and Max Beckmann, and there are also
works by contemporary artists such as Georg Baselitz, robert Combas, Denis Laget
and Christian Jaccard.
There is a room devoted to displays on the
history of sea bathing and the fishing port of les Sables d'Olonne, boat
paintings by Paul-Emile Pajot and shell pictures by Paul Amar and Hippolyte
Masse.
