Founded in
1622 the former Benedictine priory of Sainte-Croix now houses the museum
of modern and contemporary arts. With more than 2500m² of floor space
the exhibition is not housed in a brightly lit hall but in a 17th
century building resembling the inverted hull of a boat. Here works by
Gaston Chaissac and victor Brauner are displayed.
The collection includes important works by Albert Marquet, Jean
Dubuffet, Alberto Magnelli and Max Beckmann, and there are also works by
contemporary artists such as Georg Baselitz, robert Combas, Denis Laget
and Christian Jaccard.
There is a room devoted to displays on the history of sea bathing and
the fishing port of les Sables d'Olonne, boat paintings by Paul-Emile
Pajot and shell pictures by Paul Amar and Hippolyte Masse.
