Moulin des Alouettes
Les Herbiers
At the time
when Jules César invade Gaulle, a Roman legion named “the Lark”
established itself on the hill which dominates the Herbaria and which
has since been named "Mount of the Larks" (Mont des Alouettes). It is on
this hill that overlooks the town of Les Herbiers
(herbaria) that millers erected 7 windmills, of which today only one
still functions although two others remain as a quiet reminder of times
past.
A visit to this mill will give the visitor an insight into the times of
the miller, and enable one to learn about the different grades of flour
that are ground here using flint grindstones. One can also enjoy the
vast panoramic views in all directions allowing one to understand why
these windmills played a vital role as semaphore post in the Wars of the
Vendée giving the Vendéen forces hidden in the wooded countryside
foreknowledge of the positions of the Revolutionary troops.
Open; the side is open to visitor at all times to freely wonder around, the working mill is open for visits;
