Mesnard la Barotiere

Situated in the bas bocage just 8kms from Les Herbiers this small village is best known for its small 11th century church of St.Christophe and the medieval wall frescos that were discovered in 1950. Some of the gruesome 13th century paintings depict the barbecuing of saints over log fires, and the beheading of John the Baptist while others are less bloodthirsty and include the Nativity, last supper and the Annunciation there is even room for what is thought are the sponsors of the paintings. The chancel has columns ontop of which stone carvings of beasts and leaves.

Lac de la Tricherie This pretty lake just outside of the village is very popular during the summer for all manner of water pursuits including fishing, boating and swimming. There is a restaurant, mini golf, camping as well good walks and picnic areas. The lake attracts large numbers of ducks and other water fowl during the autumn and winter.
