The Logis de la Chaboterie offers an astonishingly evocative insight into the gentility of life in the Vendéen countryside in the years before the Revolution. As the scene of the arrest of General Charette in 1796, la Chaboterie is now also an important historic site which marks the end of the War of the Vendée.

A country house with activities throughout the year, there are 10 furnished rooms with sound effects and commentaries. This makes a permanent visitors trail that is unlike anything else in the Vendée. As you wander through the various rooms that are full of atmosphere you get a feeling that the owner has just stepped out, with every little detail being faithfully reproduced.

Two exhibition halls give homes to:

1. A permanent account of the Wars of the Vendée with the use of sound and lighting effects together with manikins that describe what was behind the conflict.
2. A temporary exhibition that changes annually.
At the rear of the house is an enclosed formal garden, this is a typical formal garden of the period with rectangular beds devoted to flowers, vegetables, aromatic and medicinal plants. Around the side walls are aisles of old fashion roses, many of which would have been seen in the garden in the 18th century. A water filled moat is used to replace the wall at the far end of the garden giving a vista out into the beautiful estate grounds.


In the summer there are carriage rides, and in July and August free guided tours by guides in period costumes for children aged 6-12. From 21st July to 12th August the Vendée Baroque music festival. “Festival of Baroque musiques" is held at la Charbotterie.

                       1^st September to 30^th June Mon to Sat from
                       9.30 to 18.00 and Sundays and  bank holidays
                       10.00 to 19.00.
                       Closed on the last 3 weeks of
                       January and 25^th December and 1^st January.

Tarif: Adults €6, Student & Handicapped €3, Under 18's free.
