Le Noeud Hydraulique de Bazoin
The 3
departments of Deux Sevres, Charente-Maritime and the Vendee meet on the
Marais Poitevin near the borders of 3 communes: Maille, Damvix and La
Ronde and here there is a group of engineering works that constitute a
major site in determining the hydaulic management of the wetlands of the
Marais Poitevin. At Bazoin the Canal Mignon, which drains the southern
part of the Marais Poitevin, joins the River Sevre Niortaise and the canal that streightened the Sevre Niortaise
From 1855 to 1960 the site has seen successive changes to modernize
these impressive mechanisms. The Deux Sevres dam was built first, such
installations maintain constant water levels in the marshes of the
Marais Poitevin, Then the lock gate system was added to allow shipping
to use these major waterways.
Today modern techniques have replaced man in operating the works.
The dam and the release of water are controlled by radio systems and
electronic probes.
The dams and lock gate systems and the meeting of the waterways makes
this a most picturesque place and one that most visiters to the area
never get to see.
