The original
lighthouse was constructed in 1829 and was 29 metres high, but the light
produced by the oil fired lights was insufficient to permit good visibility, so
in 1895 it was replaced by electric light. In 1951 a new lighthouse was
constructed with a height of 41 metres in all being 56 metres above sea
level. It is open to the public during the season when a spectacular
panoramic view of the whole island and surrounding seas can be
seen.
