La Tranche sur Mer
The holiday
resort of La-Tranche-sur-Mer, is on the Atlantic coast in the south of
the Vendée. It faces south towards the Ile de Re and has one of the most
favourable climates in the Vendée, and with 8 kilometres of fine sandy beaches
it is one of the Vendée’s most popular resorts. The white painted
houses and Narrow streets give the town a Mediterranean atmosphere. For
most of the year it is a sleepy quiet resort, but in July and August the
streets and beaches burst into life with a multitude of holiday makers.
The evenings come alive with entertainment, featuring both shows and
street artists. La Tranche-sur-Mer is also a Mecca for water sports, and
in particular windsurfers and surfers, and with its excellent nautical
centre, the dingy sailors are also well catered for, and many national
and international events are held here especially windsurfing events.
This very popular seaside resort originally known as 'Carvor' has been
an active port for centuries due to the protection afforded it by the
Ile de Re. Today the port is more an anchorage for pleasure boats,
though during the season there are excursions by boat to and around the
Ile-de-Re, Fort Boyard, L'ile d'Aix and La Rochelle from Mondays to
Fridays. As one would expect of a popular holiday resort the needs of
the inner man are also well catered for with a varied selection of
eateries from crêperies, pizzerias, bistros and restaurants to snack
bars and ice cream parlours. The shopping experience is also well
covered with shops selling such diverse things from gifts and souvenirs
to beach goods and clothes. Apart from the glorious beach la Tranche has
many other attractions which include l'Aunisceane a swimming pool complex, karting, Hores riding and the Amusement Park, Le Monde des Enfants - L’Ile aux Pirates for further details see Activities La Tranche-sur-Mer
In the evenings the La Tranche-sur-Mer comes alive with street
entertainment and shows. In May there is a two day jazz festival with
various artists in 3 locations. In 2010 this was held on the 8th and 9th of May. There are other shows throughout the year, and for details of these see the calendar of events
