La Mothe-Achard
A town with
many modern industries just off the D160 les Sables-d'Olonne to La
Roche-sur-Yon road, La Mothe Achard is the regions trade centre, with
regular fairs and markets. The early 20th century market hall in the
middle of the village has interesting wrought iron and blue glass. It is
also the Centre of the Pays des Achards which includes,
St.Julien-des-Landes, Chapelle-Hermier, Martinet. Le Girouard,
Beaulieu-sous-la-Roche, La Chapelle Archard, Nieul-le-Dolent. St.
Georges de Pointindoux, St Mathurin, and St.Flaive des Loups.
The river Jaunay runs through the Pays des Achards and has been utilised to form many lakes and areas for relaxation and activities. There are several interesting heritage sites within the region including; The Garreau chapel at La Chapelle-Hermier, it is one of the oldest pilgrimage places of Vendée, the Salette chapel in Martinet and its shrine, or the Moulières chapel, built in St-Georges-de-Pointindoux.
As you leave la Mothe Achard in the direction of La Roche-sur-Yon look out for the gardens of Potager Extraordinaire on your right hand side. This kitchen garden used to teach all aspects of gardening is open to the public. There specialities are the members of the cucumber family which includes gourds and pumkins in their many forms.
