L'Herbaudiere
Situated on
the very north west corner of the Ile de Noirmoutier this thrieving town is both
one of the major fishing ports of the Vendee and an important tourist
centre.
The harbour is the only deep water port on the island and was for a
long time a port for sardines with 5 canning factories, today the catch is bass,
sole, seabeam conger and mullet as well as crabs and lobsters, mainly caught by
small fishing boat though there are few deep water fishing boats as well.
Included within the harbour is a large marina with some 500 mooring and all
around the various workshops shops and restaurants that service this very busy
and colourful centre.
Just off shore is the Ile du Pilier with its
lighthouse. This island was originally connected by road to the town ,but
today access is only possible by boat.
Either side of the town are some good
stretches of beach, also areas of rock pools for collecting mussels winkels or
just looking at the marine life.
