Jardins de Chaligny St.Pexine

One of only a few gardens in the Vendee to be awarded the prestigious "jardines Remarquable" status.
The gardens, which are private, surrounds a genuine Vendeen loges built in 1639 and is part of a preserved landscape. Restoration work and continuous development since 1992 was based on the Napoleonic plans of 1820 showing a geometric design.

The concept of the design is one of rectangular blocks, the first being the loges them self, two of the face of the loges with wide gravel paths which continue out into the park forms the dimension for the main garden blocks which are further divided into blocks using wide grass paths. As the main blocks lead out into the park they are bordered by twin avenues of horse chestnut trees or lime trees. A castellated hornbeam hedge encloses the garden from the fields beyond.
The garden goes down to the banks of the river Smagne, here you will find a greenhouse and kitchen garden which again is divided into eight beds with wide grass paths.
An orangery adorned with a fountain composed of fossils houses winter lemon, sour orange and tender plants.
The orchard, framed by beds of roses and surrounding a large square of lavender.
Near to the house are square beds of aromatic and medicinal plants, a long pergola covered with vines, roses and clematis leads towards the woods.

Though the main feature of this garden is its design there are many interesting collections of plants including species of hydrangeas and hostas.
Leading off the inner court yard you have a chance to look inside some of the rooms of the Loges including; the medieval banquet hall with its collection of old gardening tool and a room containing both a large bread oven and two stone wash tubs.
