William Christie's Garden, Thire
Le Jardin du Batiment:
Illustrious conductor William Christie opens his French style garden to
the public on rare occasions and it is a treat not to be missed.
The gardens have been listed on the "Jardins Remarquable" since 2004 and as a "Monument Historique since 2007.
Situated on a quiet lane just outside Thire, the house and gardens back
onto the River Smagne and the course of this small river has been
diverted through the garden to form a small lake which is at the end of a
vista that cascades down several terraces lined by neatly clip Yew
trees.
The garden is a mix of very formal courtyards with topiary box hedges
inter-planted with roses, small quiet gravelled corners, avenues of
topiary hornbeam, and by the lake, avenues of London Plane trees. There
are herb gardens, vegetable gardens and a small herbaceous garden. There
are small water features and the sound of gently flowing water just
adds to the total tranquillity of this most pleasing garden.
This is one garden in the Vendée not to miss .
