Espace Gaston Chaissac
This
attraction portrays the life and works of "art Brut" Painter and writer
Gaston Chassac (1910-64), it is housed in the old school house that has
been restored to what it would have been like at the time he lived here.
His wife worked as a teacher at the school while Chassac daubed his very
primitive paintings in the school toilets (now awarded Historic
Monument status).
Inside the old school you will find the resource centre for the
educational workshop and the giant blue sugar box which was created by
the painter and designer Xavier de Richemont and which features the life
and works of Chaissac. There are no original paintings by the artist at
the centre save those daubed on the walls of the loos. A good
collection of these can be found at the musee-de-l'abbaye-st-croix at les Sable d'Olonne.
