This
privately owned château built in 1580 by Nicolas Rapin, High Provost of the
constables of France and companion of Henri 1V, is inhabited all year round by
the descendants of d'Octave de Rochebrune and is a listed Historic Monument. The
famous French writer George Simenon lived in the château from 1940 to
1943.
The Château is an architectural gem and is renowned for its
monumental fireplaces decorated with alchemist's symbols. It is also noted for
the stone carved coffered ceilings, its wood panelling from the Château de
Chambord and the gold-leaf suns in Louis X1V's bedroom. Also worthy of
admiration are the original paintings, furniture, collections and splendid items
of clothing from the XV11 and Xv111 centuries.
