This Renaissance
castle was built around 1625 for Jacques de Morienne a tax collector from
Fontenay le Comte. It was built on the foundations of a previous 15th century
castle. As you would expect there is a drawbridge over the moat which is one of
only 3 in the Vendée to be filled with water. This squared castle with short
squared towers has gargoyles imitating canons from which spout the rain
water. Inside the drawbridge is a large courtyard which is grassed over and
around the sides are the halls, one or two of which you can go inside and admire
their vaulted ceilings. The ground floor of part of one building houses a
very nice Creperie and during the summer tables are placed outside to allow
diners to take in the beautiful courtyard and buildings and enjoy al fresco
dining. Concerts and other cultural events also take place during the
season.
