Château des
Essarts
4, rue du Vieux Château Les Essarts. Tel. 02 51 62 95
83.
As a major
landmark in the civil and military heritage of the Vendée the Château des
Essarts has borne witness to over 1000 years of history. This Medieval Château
with its feudal moat dates from the 10th century, and sits on top of a mound
overlooking the Sèvre Nantaise. The fortified entrance gate dates from the 12th
century, the imposing square Saracen's tower from the 13th century and the
Renaissance residence from around the 16th century.
During the 19th Century a
new Château was built nearby and the whole area was landscaped by the famous
Buhler Brothers who also designed the Bois de Boulogne in Paris.
Many
important characters from history have stayed here including; Charles VII, Henry
IV and Napoleon, and the site saw much action during the wars of Religion and
the Wars of the Vendée.
