The Castle of Noirmoutier is one of the best preserved medieval sites in the Vendée, it was built in the 12th century and has survived well through the ages retaining all its charm and character. The keep with 4 cylindrical towers some 20 meters high with buttresses, has housed from the 15th century the stately residence which has been a symbol of the power of the Lords. This unassailable fortress protected the people in times of invasion, it also served as a prison in times of war.
Today the castle is a museum featuring the history of the island from prehistoric times to the turmoil of the wars of the Vendée and on to the beginnings of tourism of the 19th century. It also houses one of the largest public collection of English "jersey" pottery.
This Magnificent keep is the highest point on the island and offers the visitor a magnificent and magical panoramic view over the town, the island and the bay of Bourgneuf.
