Though
proclaiming itself the capital of the Marais Breton, the town of Challans stands
on the bas bocage facing the marshes. This large and thriving town is famous for
its ducks and chickens, which it produces in huge numbers. With almost
nineteen thousand residents, it is the second largest town in the Vendée and
acts as a hub for the North West corner of the Department. It has well
established dynamic companies, well over 200 shops and supermarkets, and three
weekly markets on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Fridays. Challans has been famous
for its fairs since the middle ages and that tradition is continued with the
very successful Faire des Mines, a 5 day exhibition in early
Sept.
Historically Challans was damaged severely during the wars of
religion and King Louis XIII stayed there while preparing for his decisive
battle for the Ile-de-Riez in 1622. During the Wars of
the Vendée the town resisted the Vendéen army’s attacks and remained
Republican.
Every year Challans hold the fair "autrefois challans" an old
time fair through out the town for 2010 these fairs will be on the 15th & 22
July also in August on the 5th & 19th. Ile Aux
Jeux. This play centre at Sallertine is ideal for keeping the younger
members of the family amused or to celebrate a birthday.
