Attractions Marais Olonne
The
attractions of the Marais Olonne are based around the natural
environment created by the draining of marshes and the centuries old
tradition of making salt.
There are certainly excellent walks and cycle tracks which is one of the
finest ways to get up close to the natural beauty of this region, for
the more adventurous and for a totally different view of these amazing

The Salt producers of the marshes can be viewed by stopping at one of
their works or you can take a boat ride through the canals of the
marshes which visits one of the salt producers. For further details

Ile d'Olonne.
The village at the centre of the marais. It is possible to get a great
view of the marshes from the top of the church tower. The tower is open
everyday in July and August from 10h to 12.30h and 16h to 19h.
On the edge of the village is the Museum de la Petite Gare. This small museum which traces the railway of Olonne which ran up to 1949 is open in July and August, Entre is Free.
Bird Observatory.
Just outside the town in the direction of Olonne-sur-mer is a wooden
bird observatory with an tremendous view over the wetlands. It is
reported that some 180 different species of bird have been observed
here. During July and August there are organised visits with telescopes
provided though you can visit at any time of the year. Open July-August

Another interesting way to see the marais is on a guided carriage ride. The Chemin du sel
stops at each of the main sites and you have a conducted tour. The
tours are on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays in July and August and can
be booked from the tourist office in the town.
