Angles

Angles 7 kilometers from La Tranche sur Mer is a small town typical of those found in the South Vendée. Enjoying one of the finest climates in France it is an ideal base to discover not only the beaches of the South Vendée but the natural beauty of the Marais Poitevin and the Bas Bocage.
The Church of Angles is one of the most interesting in the Vendée and of particular interest is its Nave, the late 12 century architecture typical of the Plantagenet style. The large statues are thought to represent Richard the Lion Heart and his parents, though others say they are symbols of Virtues. Under the choir which has is barrel-vaulted, is the crypt.
The facade is crowned by a bear-like evil beast which it is claimed ate latecomers, but was turned to stone by the holy hermit Martin, there are many myths both pagan and Christian that have been associated with this pre Christian statue
.

Tour de Moricq
Just 2 kilometres east of the town is the 15th century Moricq Tower. This impressive fortified tower was once used to defend the small harbour on the river Lay. The Tower is the Donjon of the ancient chateau-fort of 1090 built by Giraudus de Morech, it was reconstructed in 1435 and played an important role during the 100 years war before being abandoned and later becoming a grain store. It was bought by the commune of Angles in 1988 and restored. It is also interesting to note that an exact copy of this tower can be found in Nicosia in Cypress where Guy de Lusignan, a member of the wealth and influential Vendéen family who owned much of this part of France, was king of Cypress from 1192.

The Port of Moricq. Formerly a very active port, exporting cereals, wines and wood to La Rochelle and Bordeaux. The river was navigatible as far as Mareuil-sur-Lay with the small harbours of St. Benoist and Curzon in between. The sea withdrew and the port few into disuse.

L'Octroi. Situated near to Moricq this charming small building sits astride a small canal. It is not known the date of construction, but it's purpose was as a tax collection office, taxes were levied on all goods destined for local consumption. Recently restore it's charm is captured by artists of all types.

Today Angles is a holiday Centre during the summer months and as such has a lively feel to it and a good supply of shops and restaurants and a colourful market, it is well worth the detour to visit if you are in this part of the Vendée.

Markets 1st July to 31st August, Wednesdays and Sunday Morning out of season the second Wednesday of the month.
From June to September you can get a programme of events from the Tourist Office.

On the road from Angles to Les Conches look out for the storks that nest on top of electric pylons as you cross the marshes, also on the right is a small memorial to British airmen that were shot down in July 1940, the memorial  now flies the RAF standard.
