Charles Payraudeau. La Chaize-le-Vicomte.
The museum presents a collection of stuffed birds by the Taxidermist Charles Payraudeau (1798-1865)
He was the first Zoologist to study the wildlife on Corsica in 1826 and discovered two new bird species and 71 new molluscs.
In 1868, the Chaize-le-Vicomte received as a legacy the entire
collection of the naturalist Payraudeau. Charles Payraudeau (1798-1865)
was the first zoologist who compiled an inventory of the island of
Corsica in 1824 and 1825. During this expedition he discovered of two
new species of birds, the Audouin's Gull and Shag of Desmarest, as well
as 71 new species of marine and terrestrial molluscs (32 species
currently valid).
The redevelopment of the museum was completed in 1994 and led to a
restoration of the ornithological collection which continues today. The
2,000 species that together comprised of 1,200 Birds of the Western
Palaearctic and 800 birds from the Southern Hemisphere (Equatorial
Africa, South America, Australia, etc)
Open: all year round;
Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 17:00.
Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon during the months of July and August.
